Creating Quick, Healthy Meals for Your Busy Family

If your family is like many today, sitting down to dinner at the same time every night is just not possible. Between after school activities, work deadlines and other commitments, one or two dinners together is probably more like it with the local pizza place on speed dial. Healthy meals are hard to come by.

Even if you’re not eating together it is possible to set up healthy meals are important for everyone in the family whether they’re home or on a ball field. It requires some preparation and cooperation though. Here are five tips for making sure your family eating healthy.

Smoothies – healthy meals that are not just for breakfast anymore

It’s true, usually we think of a smoothie as something for breakfast but there’s nothing wrong with a nutritionally-packed smoothie for dinner. Throw in some spinach, Greek yogurt, berries and some protein powder and your kids will have a great on-the-go healthy meal while you’re at the game or even running last minute errands.

If you do have to plan healthy meals on-the-go for family members that are not at home, use a soft-side cooler to store smoothies or veggies. Arctic Zone lunch bags make clean-up a breeze!

Stock up on pre-sliced veggies.

Like me, you might start out the day with some great idea of cooking a wonderful home cooked meal but by the time the end of the day rolls around you’re exhausted. While it might be a bit pricier you can get virtually any veggie you want pre-sliced, made into “zoodles” or already combined for stir-fry. If they’re already prepared, creating a dinner takes no time and a healthy meals can be on the table in less than thirty minutes.

Embrace the bowl.

Lunch bowls and dinner bowls are the latest trend in healthy meals and an easy way to eat on the go. Even better, they can be made at the beginning of the week and your kids (and you!) can grab and go any time. Buy some pre-cooked chicken strips, cook up some quinoa or rice and throw on some corn, black beans and red peppers and layer into a microwaveable individual size bowl. After microwaving to reheat, toss on some cilantro, salsa and sour cream and you’re done.

Invest in a crock pot.

I love creating chili, soups and stews in the winter and they’re the easiest way to get a great dinner on the table in no time. First thing in the morning, throw in ground beef, pre-chopped peppers and onions, a can of black beans, a can of diced tomatoes and a package of chili seasoning mix. I even toss in some baby spinach to get more veggies and my family never knows! Set the crock pot on low and let it cook for 8 hours (the longer the better!) By the time you come home you’ve got your healthy meal ready. The beauty is that everyone can dish out their own meal whenever they get home. Throw on some shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream and some tortilla chips on the side and dinner’s ready!

We all lead incredibly busy lives and while sitting around the dinner table together might no longer work for many of us, you still can create healthy meals that you family will love.
