4 Laundry Best Practices To Make Your Life Easier

We would guess laundry day isn’t the highlight of your week—especially when you end up rewashing the same workout shirt, favorite pair of yoga pants and comfiest sports bra time and time again in order to address persistent stains and smells. While there’s nothing fun about choosing a rinse cycle and sorting through loads of darks and lights; you can improve the overall results of laundry day and banish lingering odors and stains once and for all by following these four simple practices.

1. Pre-Treat Stains: The truth is, getting a head start on stains is the best way to make sure they don’t become a nuisance. If you can help it, don’t let a stain set. Use a clean, white cloth to blot at liquids from the outside. And no matter what, treat stains before washing and ensure stains have been removed before putting clothes in the dryer since heat sets stains.

2. Wipe Out Odors: Fighting odors is hard once they’ve set in or built up. Try soaking smelly clothes in lukewarm water filled with two cups of baking soda for at least 24 hours before washing in hot water. The best tactic though? Buy clothes that feature built-in odor control technology—like Microban, which traps and neutralizes odors. Look for words like “odor control” and “odor resistant” on labels and hang tags while shopping to make sure you’re purchasing apparel that’s protected.

3. Soften Wisely: Fabric softeners and dryer sheets might make laundry irresistibly cozy, but they can also cause grease-like stains and allergy flare ups. Adding between ¼ and one cup of white vinegar to your load’s final rinse cycle works as a natural alternative, leaving laundry ultra-soft without the unwanted side effects.

4. Ditch the Bleach: When it comes to treating underarm stains, most people reach for bleach. But the problem is, bleach can actually cause yellow sweat stains to darken. A better solution? Vinegar. Add two tablespoons to one cup of water and gently rub onto stains before letting sit for 30 minutes and washing in cold water.
