Tips For Cleaning Your Home Gym

Your home gym can be a great place to workout right in the privacy and comfort of your own house. You don’t have to stand in line for the use of equipment or feel self-conscious while working out (unless you’re like me trying to do Zumba, in which case you’re embarrassed for even the cat to see you.) Anyone who uses their home gym on a regular basis knows that your equipment can get pretty gross, pretty fast. Follow these tips to keep your gym clean and germ-free.
1. Wipe down weight machines after every use
Make sure you wipe down your equipment after every time you use it, to stop the spread of germs and bacteria. While most public gyms have a rule about doing this, a lot of people tend to skip this step in their home. You can use antibacterial, pre-moistened wipes for your quick rubdown or keep things simpler and greener with a Quickie Microfiber cloth.
2. Clean your treadmill or elliptical
Use a dry, clean cloth to wipe away any sweat that you may have left behind on the deck and handrails, and also any that may have dripped down onto the conveyor belt or elliptical pedals. Then, once a week, use a damp, clean cloth to remove dust and dirt from the electronic display, and vacuum or sweep the floor underneath and around the machine. Make sure you only use water to clean, because bleach, soap, and furniture polish can damage the equipment.
3. Clean your free weights and accessories
When it comes to cleaning free weights, stability balls, or suspension trainer there’s really not that much to do. Use an anti bacterial solvent and scrub them off with a microfiber cloth or paper towel. You can do this every week, or whenever your weights start to feel a little bit grimy. This is always a great time to check the air level on your stability ball. Mine needs a refill!
4. Clean your mats
Most people don’t really think about their mats when it comes time to clean their equipment – until one day when they get down to do a push-up and realize that it’s gotten a little nasty. Between sweat, dirt, and other moisture, your exercise mats can end up smelling pretty bad and even getting moldy if they’re not cleaned regularly. If the mat is small and has a fabric-like texture, check to see if it’s safe for the washing machine. If it’s more of a rubber material, then scrub it gently using a sponge and warm soapy water. 5. Keep the air smelling fresh
Most public gyms have the luxury of giant fans, HVAC, and the inflow and outflow of crowds constantly letting fresh air in through the doors. Your home gym, however, probably won’t end up smelling so fresh when you’re done sweating up a storm (especially if it’s in the basement like mine!) When it comes time to vacuum and dust the house, don’t skip the gym. Run a vacuum or broom through every week, and dust off baseboards and ceiling fans at least once a month. When you exercise, you’re taking in a lot of excess air, so the last thing you need is dust particles floating around the room. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just include your home gym with the rest of the house to keep it fresh, clean, and hygienic.
