4 Tips for Managing Spring Germs and Pollen

Now that the warm weather’s arrived my front hallway looks as if a gym locker exploded.  There are cleats, umbrellas, bike helmets, water bottles and gym bags where ever I look.  There’s also a fair share of muddy paw and footprints.

And between the pollen and the germs, everyone also seems to be coming in sneezing and sniffling.

While you might not be able to lower the pollen count or get your kids to put stop dumping their things in the doorway, there are some ways for keeping the germs from overtaking your home.

1. Bare is best: Hardwood flooring at the entryway to your home is easier to maintain than carpeting and will help cut down on mildew and germs.  I love mats that are designed to trap dirt and germs as you step into the house.  You can wash them on a regular basis which makes it so much easier to simply sweep and mop the area to keep it clean.

For an easier cleaning experience, consider using cleaning products with built-in protection against the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew.  Quickie offers a variety of mops, mop head replacements and brushes with this added benefit.  The products last longer, and you don’t have to worry about them adding to the “mystery” spring smells in the house.

2. Clean the coolers:  In the spring, dinner usually consists of a picnic at the soccer or Little League field and more times than not the cooler is forgotten in the trunk of the car until you need it again.  Get into the habit of making a permanent home for it right outside the back door so it can be thoroughly cleaned out and air dried immediately after use to avoid mildew.

3. Maintain the cleats: Cleaning cleats is a tedious job but not only will they last longer when cared for but it will eliminate tons of dirt and germs from coming into the house.  Use a toothbrush or a tool specifically designed to clean the bottom of cleats, never a stick!  Then use a small amount of dish soap and water to clean them.  Be sure to dry completely.

4. Check the pollen count: You can’t plan your kids’ activities around the pollen count but you can take some preventative steps to help keep allergens at bay.  After a rain storm, the pollen count is usually the lowest. Typically, in the spring, early morning is the time of the highest pollen count. If possible, keep your windows closed and your air purifier running 24/7. If you do want to have windows open, you might consider turning your air purifier off for a while, then turning it back on when you’ve closed them and letting the air purifier run on high for an hour or two.

It takes a little effort to be proactive against the challenges that spring brings, but it’s more than worth it!
