Cheers to Post-Run Beer
Maybe you just crushed a challenging marathon or set a new time record. Either way, you’ve earned a beer! And the carbs, electrolytes and vitamin B12 in a lager or pale ale aren’t just refreshing—they’re great for refueling. After all, beer and running have gone hand-in-hand (or perhaps koozie in hand?) for as far back as 1950, and today, certain beers are brewed specifically with runners in mind. We’ve asked our nutritionist to share her top five post-run beers below.
Anchor Steam Lager
Beyond the light and laid-back taste of this classic San Francisco lager, it’s brilliant after a warm summer run. Like the other beers on this list, it’s a (plant-based) source of vitamin B12, and contains health-boosting phytonutrients thanks to the barley and hops.
Although darker in color than many “light” or low-calorie beers, Guinness actually has less calories than the average brew, and even has 3.5 grams of fiber! At only 128 calories, it won’t slow you down—only go down smooth.
Sierra Pale Ale
This beer is a little heavier on the hops—but that means more phytonutrients (or natural chemicals found in plants believed to be beneficial to human health). With 175 calories and 14 grams of carbs, a few sips of Sierra Pale Ale will help you start replenishing nutrients lost.
Abita Purple Haze
Extra fruit-powered nutrients and antioxidants are found in this raspberry-brewed beer, making it a healthier choice. And like the others, contains carbs and electrolytes, both of which are needed after exercise. Even better, every sip contains important compounds known as polyphenols, which may also help muscles recover from exercise.
Lil Heaven Session IPA
With less alcohol content and all the hoppy goodness you love, this brew is refreshing and delicious—without the high ABV that could take you off track. Imbibe away!
